"Moments"
How 30 people made history in Vancouver...
The original piece "Moments" was revealed at the closing party of our recent show at the Bel Art Gallery.
The mosaic depicts some bare trees near a beach in Stanley Park, looking westward over the ocean. This photo is taken by artshow photographer Jorge Posada in February, and the time of year allowed for the strong pronunciation of dark branches against a cold background.
Thank you to all of you who joined the project, I sincerely appreciate the openness with which you shard your personal photos and stories. Everyone who sent us a photo as part of this project will find that it is now eternalized in "Moments"!
As we collected photos from people for this project about the city, we noticed how much appreciation there is for the natural beauty in and around Vancouver in any season of the year. We felt that this perspective on nature in and around an urban center was quite well reflected in the Stanley Park trees.
"Moments" - Featured Mosaic with photo contributions by over 30 people in Vancouver
It was long awaited, and now here it is, a mosaic with contributed photos by Vancouverites: people who live in Vancouver BC. It's a piece of art by people who live there, work there, and play there. It's a project through which many shared their attachment to the city's beautiful natural surroundings.
The mosaic is titled "Moments", and it was the feature piece of my art show together with photographer Jorge Posada.
"Something About Us: Vancouver"Our first show ran May 15 to June 28 2007 downtown Vancouver, at the Bel Art Gallery. We had as many as 15 mosaics on display, and the show was attended by over 200 hundred people (some pieces even sold as we were setting up during opening night!). The photographs for the artwork were taken by Jorge, who spent months ahead taking thousands of pictures in the Vancouver area. |

What kind of photos ?
Those who joined this project and sent in photos, shared lots of very personal perspectives on life here in Vancouver! For some it was the city’s characteristic skyscraper skyline, and wild clouds and sunsets. For others it was a nature outing by boat, an all-smiles family photo, their pets, or even their grandma.
Others told stories of tough life challenges in the hospital, and spectacular accomplishments - in their profession and on the golf course.

What made "Moments" so special was that the photos weren't necessarily taken by artists or professional photographers. Rather, it reveals an identity of people at-large in Vancouver.

The mosaic tells a story of what we like and what has meaning to us. Not just to me, not to some artist, but to anyone who cared to send in a photo.
One of photos inspired BIG things!
One of the photos we received was from Vancouverite Elena Rivera. Her graphic design company submitted the winning logo for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. We interviewed Elena about the logo and why she sent in this particular picture. At one point she remarked:
"I love this mosaic project about Vancouver, because in a way it's an identity exercise. When I design a logo or do graphic design work, it's an identity exercise for my client. But when I sent my photo for the mosaic project, it was about my own identity. I had to try to define who I am as a Vancouverite. So I sent in the photo that represents for what I am known. It's the precise photo that was posted in my office when we designed our submission for the 2010 logo. And then I saw what pictures other people had sent in for the mosaic, and when I saw families and kids I thought "Oh, that's |

We would like to thank EVERYONE who has sent us a photo for the mosaic project. Our intent was to create a project about you, and we hope that you've had a chance to send us the photos that meant something to you.
See the pictures. Read the stories.
Take a look at the photo gallery for the thoughts behind these photos:
- This first series of photos was used in a preliminary rendering of the piece, at the art show opening.
- Since the opening we updated the photos with a second series of photos sent to us by people like you.
"Can I get a print?"
This has been our first project of this scale, with so many people, and we wanted to create an opportunity for people to own a piece of this unique artform.
In addition to the original artwork as shown at the gallery, we have also prepared a special high-definition rendering of the mosaic, which will be printed to order -at your request- in a limited run.
The brightness of the colors in this special print rendering is really quite stunning. Each photo in the mosaic comes out with absolute clarity.
Just below the mosaic there's a caption that includes the names of all the people who contributed their photo for this project. It names the people who have shared a personal story to this artwork.
These include professional photographers, amateur and hobby photographers and even a few "cell-phone" photographers (I'm sure you what that means... and even those photos look absolutely great!). As you look closely at the artwork you'll recognize lots of famous scenes in Vancouver, mixed-in with very happy moments that Vancouverites have shared with family and friends.
And it's for sale. This unique artwork will look beautiful in your home or office, and it is sure to be a great conversation piece... imagine your friends double-taking the artwork, and then you get to explain what it is. If you sent us a pciture, or if you know someone who did, you even have a special attachment to it.
To make sure the artwork remains a valuable investment, we will even frame it for you - professionally. That way it's done perfectly and without any hassles for you. Your special order will be ready to hang, right out of the box.

And of course, each print is personally signed by the artist.
Here's an illustration of what the framed mosaic looks like. Notice how the matting adds elegance and a sense of space. And the caption brings out the authenticity and scope of this project.
